Pro tips most people learn the hard way

• Compute it BEFORE someone dies, not after. Sit down with elderly parents during a calm moment, run the scenarios — "if both of you go, who gets what" — and write it on paper. Half the family bitterness after a janazah comes from heirs not knowing what they're entitled to.
• Daughters get exactly half a son's share — no more, no less, and never "nothing" because the family wants land to stay with men. Quran 4:11 is unambiguous. The cultural practice in rural Punjab and Sindh of pressuring daughters to "sign away" their share to brothers is religiously invalid and legally challengeable in Pakistani family courts.
• Wasiyyah (bequest) is capped at 1/3 of the estate AND cannot be made to existing legal heirs (per the hadith of Sa'd ibn Abi Waqqas). So you can't "leave the house to my favourite son" — that's not how Islam structured this. The 1/3 wasiyyah is for non-heirs (charities, friends, a non-Muslim relative).
• Debts, funeral expenses, and unpaid Zakat come OFF the estate before Faraiz distribution begins. If a deceased had PKR 20M in assets and PKR 5M in unpaid loans/medical bills, Faraiz applies to the remaining PKR 15M only. Heirs cannot inherit and ignore debts.
