Pro tips most people learn the hard way

• WebP is the default in 2025 unless something specific blocks you. ~25-35% smaller than JPEG at matching visual quality, supports transparency, works in 95%+ of browsers in use. The only reason not to use it is if your downstream system (an old CMS, a print workflow, an email client) doesn't accept it.
• Converting a JPEG to PNG makes it bigger, not smaller. PNG is lossless, so it can't compress photographic noise the way JPEG does. PNG is for graphics with flat colors and sharp edges. JPEG-to-PNG conversion is one of the most common ways people accidentally inflate file sizes.
• Quality 80 is the sweet spot for JPEG and WebP. Below 70 you start seeing blockiness on faces and gradients; above 90 the file gets bigger fast with almost no visible improvement. Quality 80 is what every web performance guide quietly recommends — start there and only adjust if the result looks wrong.
• Canvas conversion strips EXIF, which is usually what you want. GPS coordinates, camera model, capture timestamp — all gone after a round-trip through this tool. Great for privacy when sharing photos online; bad if you need that metadata for a photo library, in which case use a metadata-preserving converter.
• Nothing leaves your browser. Open DevTools, switch to the Network tab, drop a file — no requests fire. Useful when the image is a confidential design mockup, a customer-uploaded photo, or anything you're contractually not allowed to send to a third-party server.
